Dundee United now occupy fourth spot in the SPL after beating Inverness Caledonian Thistle thanks to a 25-yard goal from John Rankin, a six-yard headed goal from Scott Robertson and an incredible show of skill from Johnny Russell. A victory which sees the Terrors unbeaten in seven games.
The home side took the lead after 15 minutes thanks to a poor kick from Inverness keeper Ryan Esson. John Rankin easily intercepted ahead of Inverness captain Richie Foran whose appeals for handball fell on deaf ears. Rankin momentarily hesitated, weighing up his options before unleashing an unstoppable left footed strike from 25 yards that sailed over Ryan Esson and into the back of the net.
The rest of the first half was quiet if truth be told with Dusan Pernis only having a William McKay shot to save on 19 minutes. United, on the other hand, could have sparked some more life into the game on 42 minutes. An excellent move started with Willo Flood's short, sharp pass to Johnny Russell whose one-two with Jon Daly put him clean through to the right hand junction of the six-yard box; unfortunately his attempt low and across the face of the Inverness goalkeeper was diverted from its intended target and the score line remained 1-0 at the halfway mark.
In the 51st minute, a Richie Foran foul on Johnny Russell from behind resulted in a free kick which, taken by Flood, found Daly at the back post. His header back across goal met the head of Scott Robertson whose header bounced past Esson to double United's lead.
The game continued with United the more creative of the two sides. In 61 minutes the Terrors were denied what appeared to be a stonewall penalty with Russell's ball striking the hand of Golobart.
On 78 minutes the match was wrapped up for the home side with the best goal of the night. Daly received the ball wide on the right. His ball into Russell just inside the area presented him with an opportunity to put on a master class in beating defenders. He took the ball forward and expertly weaved past Tokely and Gillet and, just as he had the fans drooling over his skill, he finished in scintillating fashion slipping the ball low past Esson.
Man of the Match: Throughout the game, Johnny Russell was hungry, determined and always ready to put on a show. Unlucky not to score in the first half, his goal on 78 minutes was a joy to behold and sums up his performance on the night.
