United and St Mirren played out a goalless draw at Tannadice this afternoon. United had the bulk of the possession however could not find a winner in a somewhat disappointing encounter.
United made just one enforced change for the visit of the Buddies. Garry Kenneth could not recover in time from his groin problem so Sean Dillon stepped in. Former United man Steven Thompson missed out for the Paisley side after being sent off in midweek against Ross County.
First Half:
After a slow start to the game the home crowd came to life when they made a loud appeal for a penalty when Armstrong was nudged in the penalty box but the referee waved play on. Gary Mackay-Steven was United's most dangerous man in the first half and twice he found Daly with great crosses but the big Irishman missed the target on both occasions. The closest United went before the break was on the half hour mark. Russell was fouled by McAusland and from Paul Dixon's free kick Gunning headed into the path of Daly who just failed to make contact from close range. A minute later Daly set up Russell but his shot was blocked by Saints' McAusland.
Second Half:
Early on in the second period United were restricted to long range efforts with both Rankin and Mackay-Steven failing to test Samson. With very little happening on an attacking front Peter Houston brought on new signing Milos Lacny with half an hour left. Ten minutes later Russell went very close for United when a fine turn and shot forced Samson into a fine save. The visitors offered very little in up front but with ten minutes left they almost stole the points. An Imrie cross from the right was left by Gunning and from nowhere substitute Hasselbaink stole in and to the relief of the home defence he failed to connect and Pernis gathered. United threw everything at St Mirren in the closing minutes and at the death a Neilson cross landed at the feet of Rankin but the United midfielder shot over.
Summing Up - Although United were the superior side and had the majority of the play they looked very unlike scoring all afternoon and in the end a share of the points was about right.
