The overall winners of the evening were the guests who attended and the night finished with the players making themselves available for pictures and autographs with all who attended!
The purpose of the evening was to give out the Club's Annual Awards and the players sat expectantly and eager as each award was handed out. The first award of the evening was the Under 19 player of the year award which was chosen by Youth Director Steve Campbell. The award was won by Paddy Barrett despite strong competition from Ryan Gauld, Steven Smith and Darren Petrie.
The next award was the Goal of the Season Award. This Award was voted for online by over 2000 United followers. Despite there being 7 other strong candidates for the award and indeed several more which didn't make the final shortlist, it was the Johnny Russell goal against Inverness CT in the 3-0 win back in March which unanimously won the award. Johnny Russell came on stage to great applause to collect his award from Ewan Hannan - Ewan had bid successfully on the Club's ebay auction to present the award.
When the panel chose the nominations for Moment of the Season there was always going to be only one winner. Those that were in attendance at McDiarmid Park on 11th February and witnessed Gary Mackay-Steven perform the 'gazgetaway' will have that moment forever etched in their minds. Another lucky ebay auction winner, Kevin Finnie, presented Gary with his award.
After being thoroughly entertained by Guest Speaker George McNeil, the atmosphere was gradually building as the night reached it's crescendo with the three final awards. Club Chairman Stephen Thompson was to reveal the nominations for the Player's Player of the Year Award and Paul Dixon, John Rankin and Johnny Russell all received votes from their fellow team mates but it was Club Captain Jon Daly who was the unanimous choice amongst his team mates.
The nominations for the Young Player of the Year Award were possibly obvious to anyone watching the team this season. Gavin Gunning, Johnny Russell and Stuart Armstrong have all been outstanding this season but it was the 'messi' like talents of Gary Mackay-Steven which saw him collect the award from majority shareholder and Vice Chair Cath Thompson. The final award of the evening was revealed to an electric atmosphere as the packed room stood as one to applaud John Rankin up to receive his Player of the Year Award from Manager Peter Houston. John was up against Jon Daly, Paul Dixon and Gary Mackay-Steven and revealed his pride and astonishment at winning the award. Like every other player he made reference to the special team bond that exists at Tannadice and explained how important this is to players. The photo can be viewed here.
All in all a wonderful evening, carefully put together by the Commercial and Media teams was once again a United success. Roll on next season's awards dinner!
