UNITED 1 - 2 ABERDEEN

2nd January 2012

A late 40 yard strike from Kari Arnason gave Aberdeen a 2-1 victory over United this afternoon. United were well on top in the first half and were ahead through Jon Daly but things changed in the second half when Chalali equalised and then Arneson stole the points. The game could have been different had the referee awarded United a penalty when Russell was denied a shooting opportunity with only the keeper to beat.

For the fourth consecutive game Peter Houston named an unchanged starting line up for the visit of Aberdeen. New signing Richie Ryan was listed as a substitute at a packed Tannadice.

First Half:
It was a great start to the New Year for United when after only six minutes they took the lead when Daly latched on to a Rankin pass and shot in off the post. United then dominated without creating much and eventually after 23 minutes Aberdeen had a chance when Foster shot wide and then a minute later Pernis saved well from Fallon. Seven minutes from the break a mix up in the visitors' box almost handed United a comical second but Brown back-tracked and stopped the ball before it crossed the line. Two minutes later there was controversy when a brilliant pass from Dixon found Russell who was brought down by Consadine with only the keeper to beat but the referee waved play on.

Second Half:

Aberdeen started the second period more brightly and a couple of dangerous set pieces were well defended by the United defence. United won a free kick themselves on the 55 minute mark but Dixon's free kick was deflected wide. Robertson then played a low near post cross to Daly and the United skipper was unlucky to shoot just wide. With 67 minutes gone the Dons brought on Chalali and straight away he scored with his first touch when Arneson's throw in was flicked on by McCardle and headed home by the substitute. There was fury amongst the home support as the original throw awarded to Aberdeen appeared to deflect off an Aberdeen player. United should have responded in the best possible way when Daly set up Russell who was denied by Consadine and then seconds later Brown saved a close range effort from Scott Robertson. The play was swinging from end to end and with 15 minutes left Milson missed when it looked easier to score with a header from the six yard box. It looked like the next goal would settle it and unfortunately for United a thunderbolt from 40 yards from Arneson with three minutes to go won it for the visitors. United did go close at the end when Jack cleared a Daly header off the line.

Summing Up: A tough one to take for United who started the game so brightly. A couple of decisions that went against the hosts certainly proved vital in a hugely entertaining match.

Man of the match; Paul Dixon. He looked dangerous all afternoon for United.
