RANGERS 5 - 0 UNITED

2nd May 2012

Dundee United succumbed to five goals at Ibrox with Sone Aluko grabbing a double and Steven Whittaker, Jamie Ness and Alejandro Bedoya completing the scoring. A result which sees an end to United's hopes of Champion's League football next season.

United were unchanged from the side who drew with Hearts. Rangers made two changes from the side who lost to Celtic in Sunday's Old Firm derby. Salim Kerkar and Ness replacing Lee McCulloch and Andy Little.

Rangers took the lead after just six minutes when Rhys McCabe slipped a pass to Whittaker and he powerfully slotted past Dusan Pernis into the bottom corner.

Dundee United were able create chances and Allan McGregor had to be on form to deny an excellent Gary Mackay-Steven effort tipping the ball over the bar.

However, Rangers increased their lead after 16 minutes when Garry Kenneth was dispossessed by Kerkar and he played the ball to Aluko who sprinted through the United defence before firing home.

Things went from bad to worse for United a mere four minutes later when Aluko again exploded into the box leaving Pernis with no chance, slotting home to make it 3-0.

United made two changes at half time with Barry Douglas and Keith Watson replacing Mackay-Steven and Kenneth.

United were beginning to get a foothold in the game and for ten minutes United had the most of possession.

However, Rangers were dangerous on the counter and Aluko again swept into the penalty box in the 51st minute but his shot was saved by Pernis.

The game was put out of sight for United by Jamie Ness who picked up the ball on the edge of the area dispatching it into the net on 57 minutes.

Despite the scoreline, United were getting in some decent positions to score. Indeed, United were peppering the Rangers box with corner kicks, the final tally being nine corners for United compared to Rangers' four. Unfortunately, The Tangerines couldn't convert these opportunities.

A consolation goal could have rescued some positives for United and chances fell to both Jon Daly and Johnny Russell. Daly sent his close range header wide of the mark, followed shortly by MacGregor denying Russell with a save from the Scotland Under 21 cap's shot.

With six minutes to go it was Bedoya who found the back of the net. Receiving a Maurice Edu pass the American fired home from just inside the area to make it 5-0 and to end a disappointing night for United.
