MOTHERWELL 0 - 0 UNITED

26th November 2011

The first half was a tight affair. United started the brighter side although Motherwell's pace and prowess in attack was not to be underestimated. The first chance of the match fell to Michael Higdon. Darren Randolph's goal kick found its way to the big striker on the edge of the area. However, his shot on the turn didn't have the cleanest of connections and Pernis tipped wide.

The visitors' first chance came as a result of great skill from Gary Mackay-Steven. Willo Flood's corner was cleared but found Mackay-Steven and his beautiful control on the byline left Motherwell's defenders for dust. Unfortunately, his cutback was cleared behind for a corner before it could find a team mate.

Another chance came for United on 37 minutes. A Mackay-Steven corner found Rankin whose shot bounced back off Randolph's legs and almost fell to the unmarked Garry Kenneth.

The wind and rain were taking their toll on the game and both sides were hoping for errors at the other end in order to create chances. This tactic almost bore fruit for the Tangerines. A Kenneth long ball was missed by Hitchinson and Jon Daly curled a shot across the face of goal. However, it was was well held by Randolph.

United managed the conditions better than the home side in the first half. The second half, however, was edged by the Steelmen. Humphrey, Hammell and Law were looking much more dangerous going forward with Humphrey's pace leaving Dixon working hard.

The first real chance of the half came for Motherwell. A Nicky Law corner was manipulated by the strong wind and fell to Hutchinson. However his header was straight at Pernis.

There was another test for Pernis on 71 minutes. Hammell and Daley combining down the left and the Jamaican Daley tried to cut back from the byline only to see the big Slovak smother down low.

The game began to run out of steam as both sides were managing to deal with the conditions. Though there were a few chances for Rankin, one almost saw him clean through but for a Steve Jennings tackle.

Credit must go to all the fans who travelled to the game in such dreary weather.
