UNITED 1 - 1 ST MIRREN

6th August 2011

Ten man St Mirren escaped Tannadice with a point today as they held out against a barrage of United attacks in the second half of the game.

Nigel Hasselbaink saw red in the first half after he elbowed the chasing Paul Dixon and was instrumental in creating the first goal of an open but physical game.
Hasselbaink picked the ball on the left and after wriggling past the United defence stabbed it back to former United man Steven Thompson who prodded the ball home.

United entered the second half with a very clear intent to attack. Paul Dixon was a driving force for Dundee United down the left creating many chances with his deep crosses; however, there were no takers.

Much of last week's praise was levelled at young Scott Allan and today the home fans got a glimpse of the newest young talent to rise through the ranks. It was Allan who with great pace and tight control drove to the byline and much like Hasselbaink in the first half cut the ball back to the on-rushing Daly who knocked the ball over the line for a well-deserved equaliser.

United continued to operate in the St Mirren half but the visitors clogged the way through and United could not find the clear path to another goal.

Frustratingly, the winner could not be found and as the final whistle arrived both teams left the field with rather different perspectives on their point-a-piece.
