YOUTHS LOSE TO HAMILTON

22nd October 2010

The Tannadice youngsters only had themselves to blame for their defeat to Accies at St Andrews University Sports Grounds this afternoon.

In the first half they had enough chances to put the game out of sight and then having gone ahead though Stuart Armstrong, the outstanding performer on the park, conceded two sloppy goals before the break and lost a third late on as they chased a leveller.

If the visitors had the lion's share of possession in that opening period, then it was United who posed the most threat.

In fact, they went ahead with their first attack, Armstrong deftly taking the ball past a defender before squeezing it inside the far post from the tightest of angles.

On 33 minutes, Armstrong was denied a second by the keeper, who was at full stretch to keep out his shot after running on to a long through ball from Gavin Stokes.

It took a defensive mix-up between goalkeeper Mark McCallum and Grant Mosson to allow Jordan McCue in for an easy equaliser eight minutes from the break.

Back roared United and Robert Thomson, Stokes, who hit the post, and Davie Shaw all went close, only for Accies sub Chris Roxburgh to nick an interval advantage on the stroke of half time with a shot on the turn.

Second half was much more evenly contested but the New Douglas Park outfit looked the likelier lot with McCallum coming to the rescue on a couple of times.

But he was unlucky on the second occasion because having made a great save, Roxburgh, just inside the box, directed a measured header from the rebound to finally kill off home hopes.

Dundee United: McCallum, Lee, Mosson, Young, Shaw, W Robertson (Campbell 60), Swanson, Stokes, Elfverson (Scott 82), Armstrong, R Thomson.
