The Tannadice teenagers had to fight tooth and nail to share the spoils with their Tynecastle counterparts at St Andrews on Saturday morning.
Indeed, both halves were a mirror image of each other with the bigger and stronger visitors taking the initiative early on, but United eventually coming into the game.
Neither side created a real chance of note in the first half.
Playing up the slope and against a stiff wind, United's second half efforts were more praiseworthy.
Because when they did get a foothold in the game, they created three great chances.
Only a defender denied Robert Thomson, blocking his back post header
Shane Campbell went close too with a similar chance and so did Thomson again with a header.
However, with eight minutes left, it seemed Hearts were set to take the points.
They were awarded a penalty in circumstances reminiscent of the one Aberdeen's Paul Hartley conceded at Tannadice the previous week, but an upraised flag by the female assistant referee saw the referee reverse his decision against Willie Robertson.
Just afterwards, United had Gavin stokes sent off for a second booking, but that only levelled things up with Hearts having already had a player dismissed.
But before the end, keeper Marc McCallum made a marvellous save to enable the Tangerines to take the point their endeavours deserved.
