U19s DEFEAT HIBS

28th August 2010

In a hard-fought encounter at their St Andrews training complex, the young Tangerines narrowly edged out their Easter Road counterparts on Saturday morning.

Much of the credit for winning their first home game of the season went to United keeper Marc McCallum who produced a string of important saves.

In a first half dominated by Hibs in terms of possession, he made two fine stops early on and another even better one just before the break.

The decisive goal came after 25 minutes when a Michael Lee effort was blocked and Gavin Stokes stuck away the loose ball from six-yards.

And a minute later Stuart Armstrong would have made it two, but for a superb save by the visiting keeper.

Immediately on the re-start, Hibs hit the bar, but thereafter it was very much nip and tuck.

However, more McCallum heroics were required to earn the three points, keeping out a header from point-blank range seconds before the end.

Dundee United: McCallum, R Smith, Lee, Young, Shaw, W Robertson, Stokes, Thomson (Campbell 73), Elfverson, Armstrong, L Swanson (Scott 79). Subs not used: Ferguson, Mosson, McCulley.
