The youth side were short of some key players on Saturday at the Hibs Training Centre with a number out through injury and others on duty elsewhere. On the positive side, it meant that Ross Smith and Dale Hilson were promoted to the first team squad, with the latter making his senior debut and playing his part in the build up to Garry Kenneth's equaliser.
The youths' match against a very talented Hibs side was regarded by Stevie Campbell as a good result in the circumstances and, although the home side had much the better of the first half, United had good efforts from Liam Scott and Ryan Dow. A tactical change towards the end of the first half brought improved performance and the defence contained a lively Hibs attack thereafter.
In the second half, United were more threatening, with the pace of John Murray giving the home defenders problems. Michael Lee was denied a goal scoring opportunity and Stuart Armstrong brought out a top class save from the Hibs keeper.
Stevie Campbell said that lessons would be learned from the defeat by Falkirk a week earlier and evidence of this was seen in what he described as a happy outcome in this match.
