United progressed comfortably through to the third round of the Co-Operative Insurance League Cup this evening with a 2-0 victory at Recreation Park against Alloa.
Both goals came in the first half, with Andis Shala heading home from a Craig Conway corner after 23 minutes, while David Goodwillie doubled the advantage six minutes from half time, running onto a Paul Dixon through ball and finishing low beyond David Crawford.
Further chances came in the second half - with Shala, Goodwillie, Scott Robertson and Garry Kenneth all denied by either goalkeeper or defender, while Prince Buaben shot wide from close range in the dying stages.
Man of the Match: David Goodwillie. His movement and pace caused constant problems for the Alloa defence, and fittingly the 20 year-old scored in composed manner to mark the occasion of his 50th appearance in a United shirt.
