Dundee United Chairman Stephen Thompson today presented Council Leader Ken Guild and Convenor of Social Work Councillor Jim Barrie with over 220 Dundee United season tickets for circulation to children and young people from across Dundee, together with an allocation for their adult supervisors and carers.
The season tickets, valued at some £35,000 have been made available through donations and fund raising from local and exiled fans, supporters' organisations, messageboards and from the Club itself which has £1 for £1 matched the generosity of the fans. The appeal will also benefit this year from the Club's Centenary Dinner in September, the proceeds from which are in aid of United for Kids.
This is the fifth year of the United for Kids Appeal, which provides season tickets for some of the most disadvantaged children receiving support from children's services across Dundee, together with an allocation for their carers and supervisors.
The tickets will be circulated across Dundee's Integrated Children and Young Person's Services, both within the city council and the voluntary sector.
Councillor Guild praised Dundee United and their fans for their generosity, saying "it is a great opportunity for those children living in residential or foster care, or have previously been 'looked after', or young carers or generally those children to who could not otherwise afford to attend matches."
Councillor Barrie echoed those comments saying that, "Many of those benefiting from the tickets today come from some of Dundee more disadvantaged communities with little or no hope of seeing their local football heroes in action on a weekly basis
Bert Sandeman who co-ordinates the scheme on behalf of Dundee City Council said, "The feedback from this scheme in the four years has been extremely positive, with workers and carers reporting that children and young people were getting a great deal from the scheme. When Dundee United contacted us again this year, the demand from organisations meant that we very quickly exceeded last year's record number of requests. We were delighted therefore that Dundee United and its supporters responded immediately, and generously, to the situation and that this demand can be met in full."
Dundee United Chairman Stephen Thompson added, "This is the fifth year of what I believe to be a quite unique appeal in Scottish football and possibly even in the UK. Once again we have been delighted by the tremendous response by our fans to this initiative and I would like to thank them very much for their generosity. I would also like to thank supporters of other clubs who have also donated to this good cause. I believe that this shows Scottish football, as a whole, in a very good light."
