Newcastle United will be Dundee United's centenary guests when we play our first home game of the Centenary Season at Tannadice on Sunday, August 2 (kick-off 3pm).
The Magpies are travelling to Scotland to play this game only and this centenary fixture reflects a rich history between the two clubs.
In addition to a number of friendly games in the past, the two clubs have played each other four times in competitive action.
Manager Joe Harvey, who played for Dundee United during the war years in 1943, brought his Newcastle side to begin the defence of their Fairs Cup crown at Tannadice in September, 1969. A double from Welsh forward Wynn Davies saw Newcastle win 2-1, with United's counter coming from Ian Scott. Keith Dyson netted the only goal for the Magpies in the return leg at St. James' Park.
We met again in the Texaco Cup in the 1973/74 season, with United enjoying a 2-0 victory at Tannadice, with goals from Frank Kopel and Archie Knox. But goals from Pop Robson, John Tudor, Malcolm Macdonald and Tommy Cassidy saw the Geordies run out 4-1 winners on Tyneside, with United's counter scored by a youthful Andy Gray.
Several players have donned the colours of both clubs in recent times, most notably Darren Jackson, Michael O'Neil, Kevin Gallacher and Duncan Ferguson.
Indeed, at £350,000, Michael O'Neil was Dundee United's record signing at the time he left Newcastle.
Prior to this, Duncan Hutchison, Ian Mitchell and Alex Reid were the subject of transfer dealings between the two clubs.
Admission prices and further information will be announced in due course.
