A contrasting performance by the Tannadice youngsters didn't deserve a defeat of such proportions at North End Park yesterday afternoon.
Whilst they weren't at the races in the first half, they came out of the traps flying in the second half and, in addition to carving out a couple of very good chances, were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty, only to be hit by two late sucker punches.
But it was Motherwell who stamped their authority on the game at the start, which saw them take a fifth minute lead.
From a United clearance the ball fell to Dario Quinn on the half-way line and his powerful header up the park put Calum Hendrie in behind the defence and hammered home the opener from just inside the box.
Despite the visitors continued dominance, they didn't create too many more clear-cut. chances.
The second half was a totally different story with Scott Allan almost equalising within the first minute, blazing over a Ryan Dow cross at the far post.
Midway through the half, a sustained spell of United pressure ended with visiting keeper Stephen Coutts clutching Davie Shaw's low drive from 15-yards.
Shortly afterwards, substitute John Murray was pushed off the ball in the box, but no penalty was forthcoming.
However, Paul Slane sealed victory with eight minutes left when he turned his marker to crack a tremendous drive into the top right hand corner from sixteen yards out.
Then right on time, the visitors scored a third with an even better effort, Steven Lawless sweetly striking home a magnificent volley from 20-yards which was rough justice on United's second half efforts.
