But it was United who got their noses in front when Danny Swanson chased down a Sean Dillon through ball and with the ball holding up in the wind, Shaun Hutchinson's attempted clearance saw him lobbing the ball over the stranded keeper and into the net.
The big Polish keeper soon atoned for that with a fine block from David Robertson.
However, he can consider himself extremely fortunate not to have conceded a penalty immediately afterwards, bringing down Robertson in the box for what looked a proverbial stonewaller.
But had it not been for the brilliance of home keeper Michael McGovern, two minutes from time, the visitors would have snatched a draw.
Robert McHugh was unmarked when he met a Ryan Wilson cross and his header looked certain to square matters, only for McGovern to keep it out with an incredible one-handed save from point blank range.
