UNDER-19S LOSE 1 - 2 TO FALKIRK

21st March 2009

A highly controversial late goal gave the young Bairns victory over their Tanandice counterparts at Thomson Park on Saturday morning.

The goal that so upset the home side was scored by Paul Sludden, but only after the ball had punched into his path by a team-mate's hand!

Although the assistant referee raised his flag following the incident, the referee inexplicably over-ruled him and the goal stood.

To say the least it was rough justice on the Tannadice teenagers who deserved at least a point.

Earlier, however, United had gifted the visitors the lead, keeper Conor Grant bringing down an onrushing striker and the resultant penalty was coolly slotted home.

Twice United came close to getting back on level terms, David Shaw and Michael Lee going close with headers.

The Tangerine youngsters, however, got their reward ten minutes after the re-start, when Michael Lee netted after a Ross McCord cross had been helped on by David Shaw.

And with Ross McCord only being denied by a great save from the visiting keeper and Ryan Dow also having a good effort saved, there appeared to be only one team going to win it until the referee gave Falkirk a helping hand with that extremely debatable winner.

Even then, United should have pulled the iron out of the fire because in the last minute, substitute Greg White somehow fired over from two-yards.

Dundee United: Grant, Leighton (White 46), Shaw, Lee, Irvine, Allan, Ross McCord, Stokes, Dow, Hilson, Murray. Subs not used: Hindley, K Smith, Burns, L Swanson, McCulley, Scott.
