It was fitting that this rather scrappy affair at Station Park yesterday afternoon finished all square in a game of few chances.
There was good news and bad news on the injury front for United though.
On-loan midfielder James Wesolowski saw his first competitive action in tangerine and completed his allotted 45 minutes unscathed. But there was concern when Danny Swanson was stretchered off after an hour with a knee injury.
United made the better start and their best effort of the half came from David Goodwillie whose effort forced a save from visiting keeper Graeme Smith.
So when Rangers went ahead after 37 minutes it was against the run of play.
Aaron Niguez, making a swift return to the ground where he scored his first goal for the Ibrox outfit six days earlier, breezed past two defenders to deliver a precision cross to Steve Lennon at the far post.
And despite the best efforts, of Michael McGovern and Garry Kenneth, they couldn't keep out the striker's downward header.
Play continued to be somewhat untidy after the break and United were denied a penalty for a handball offence.
However, they did equalise with quarter of an hour left when Garry Kenneth rose to head home a Paul Dixon free-kick.
Like United, Rangers also had claims for a penalty rejected when Lennon was downed in the box by keeper McGovern only for the referee to wave play on.
