Dundee United today announced that Sean Dillon had joined Jon Daly and Lee Wilkie by signing a three year contract extension, securing him to the Club until May 2012.
The popular 25 year old defender joined the Club in January 2007 as Manager Craig Levein's second major signing of that transfer window. He quickly established himself as a first team regular at full back and has played over 70 games for the Club over the last two seasons, earning a Republic of Ireland 'B' cap in the process.
Manager Craig Levein said, "Sean is a natural right back, but is also a very versatile defender who is able to fill any position along the back line. This gives me options and cover defensively and helps to strengthen the squad as a whole. However, first and foremost, Sean is a naturally gifted attacking full back with a great ability to deliver quality crosses into the box. He is a model professional who goes about his business in the right way and I'm delighted that he so readily agreed to sign on for a further three years.
"Sean joins Jon Daly and Lee Wilkie in agreeing new terms and these are all very important moves for the Club. Lee is the club captain and is a hugely influential player for us. We understood that he had to be given a little time to carefully consider his future and are absolutely delighted that he chose to stay with Dundee United."
Sean Dillon said, "I'm delighted to be staying with Dundee United for another three and a half years from now. My partner and I are very settled and happy in the area and this is not only important to us, but also to our families back home who visit us regularly. I enjoy being at the Club with a great bunch of lads and it's also good to know that my immediate future is secure.
Although I made the decision to stay based on my own circumstances alone, it was good to know that Jon Daly and Lee Wilkie had already agreed to stay on. We all get on well together and I feel that if the nucleus of the squad can be kept together we can go on to achieve things at Dundee United. However, aside from my personal circumstances, the biggest factor in my decision to re-sign was the fact that the Manager had already agreed to stay. In my view this move sent out a hugely positive signal about the future of Dundee United, not only to the supporters, but also to the players."
Captain Lee Wilkie also expressed his delight at remaining with the Club he has supported since a boy. He said, "Dundee United gave me a chance when others clubs were reluctant to do so and have treated me well ever since I arrived. I'll always be grateful for that and this of course influenced my decision to stay. The Manager has also been superb and has helped me - and the team - progress. The supporters too have been tremendous towards me; I can identify with them and like them, feel we're on the verge of achieving something here. So although I'm at a critical stage in my career and had to carefully consider my future, it really would have been difficult to leave here."
