Dundee United today announced that Darren Dods, Morgaro Gomis and Prince Buaben had all signed contract extensions until May 2011.
Darren Dods joined the Club in June 2007 after signing a pre contract in January of that year. The experienced and powerful defender has been a commanding presence in the heart of the defence, whilst also adding a goal threat at set pieces. He has now made 56 appearances for Dundee United, scoring five goals in the process and continues to be an important and influential player at the Club. His current contract expires at the end of May and despite reported interest from other clubs, both the player and the Manager were keen to extend his stay at Dundee United.
Morgaro Gomis was Craig Levein's first signing for Dundee United in January 2007, having spotted the midfielder playing for Cowdenbeath some months earlier. The 23 year old former Montpelier and Chelsea youth player was signed as "one for the future", but made the transition from the Scottish Second Division to the SPL with ease, making twelve impressive appearances for the first team that season. He became a first team regular the following season and has now made 79 first team appearances. His current deal is not due to expire until 2010, but his importance to the team is such that an extension was warranted now.
The former Ajax youth player, Prince Buaben, was signed from non league football after residential issues forced Ajax to let him go. The 20 year old powerful midfielder made his debut in pre season games against Raith Rovers and Barcelona in July 2007 and quickly established himself as a first team player. He capped a fine season by being called into the Ghana full international squad for a friendly against Mexico. So far this season, he has featured only sparingly but the Manager has high hopes for his future.
Manager Craig Levein said, "My admiration for Darren Dods as a player and model professional is no secret and, despite his age, I had no hesitation in offering him a further two year contract to ensure his services were retained for the Club. He is extremely fit, looks after himself well and will continue to play an important role at Dundee United over the next two years.
"While the contracts for Morgaro and Prince were not due to expire until May 2010, they have both made an immediate - and earlier than expected - impact as first team players and I am confident that they will both develop even further. It was important therefore to not only reward them, but to secure them for Dundee United for a longer period. This is all part of our strategy for the future of the Club."
