RESERVES LOSE AGAINST ABERDEEN

25th November 2008

The United Reserves were unlucky to lose 2 - 0 against Aberdeen at Brechin this afternoon, after playing with ten men for most of the match following Prince Buaben's sending-off on 20 minutes.

The dismissal of Prince Buaben after only 21 minutes was pivotal to Aberdeen winning a tightly fought contest on a boggy Glebe Park.

The midfielder saw red after appearing to stamp on Chris Maguire after the Dons' striker flicked a foot in his direction.

Prior to that the Tanandice second string had dictated things. Ironically, less than a minute before his dismissal, Buaben had a first time drive from the edge of the box brilliantly saved by Bateman.

And just five minutes earlier, Batemen had spread himself to block an Andis Shala effort after neat incisive play by David Goodwillie and Buaben set up the chance.

Little had been seen of Aberdeen before United were reduced to ten men, but within a couple of minutes of gaining numerical superiority, Michael Paton saw his angled drives palmed away by Michael McGovern and shortly afterwards Rogvi Holm headed over when unchallenged in front of goal.

The Dons ought to have gone in ahead at the interval when Maguire was clean through, but McGovern smothered his low shot.

However, Aberdeen made the breakthrough on the hour mark when substitute Gary Carroll picked his spot with a header from a Richard Foster cross.

Refusing to buckle, United came close to equlaising midway through the second half when Greg Cameron's first time effort was superbly pushed away by Bateman.

Play raged from end to end and on 71 minutes, McGovern beat away a Maguire effort as Aberdeen looked to kill off the stubborn Tangerines.

And they did that in 77 minutes when following a surging run down the left, Foster cut the ball back and though de Visscher's attempt was blocked, the ball fell nicely for Carroll to ram the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

Despite this, hard working United refused to lie down and twice in the closing stages David Goodwillie was only inches away from hitting the target.
