SPL WEEKEND OF ACTION

30th October 2008

All SPL clubs will this weekend take part in the Show Racism The Red Card campaign. The 'weekend of action' is aimed at increasing awareness of the issues and reinforcing the work undertaken by SPL clubs in support of the campaign.

Before kick off this weekend, clubs playing at every Clydesdale Bank Premier League game will be united in calling for an end to racism in football and in society. Players in over 40 European countries are involved in similar events as part of a fortnight of action by the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network against racism and discrimination.

Lex Gold, the Executive Chairman of the Scottish Premier League said "The SPL and its Clubs deplore all forms of racist behaviour. Any racist behaviour will not be tolerated at Clydesdale Bank Premier League fixtures. We are delighted to support the Show Racism the Red Card campaign. We applaud the good work being done, but there is no room for complacency and we encourage everyone to support this initiative."

Dundee United, in partnership with ArabTRUST, held another Show Racism the Red Card Seminar for local school children last Friday. The event was held ahead of the "weekend of action" and as part of the FARE campaign. The seminar was attended by 100 S2 pupils, 50 from Menzieshill HS and 50 from St John's HS respectively.

Director Derek Robertson said: "This is our sixth major anti-racism seminar at Tannadice and complements other anti-racist initiatives undertaken by the club.

"We are fully supportive of the work of SRTRC and once again, are grateful to ArabTRUST for helping to organise the seminar on our behalf. We'd also like to thank the members of Dundee United Business Club for their valued help on the day."

The Fortnight of Action this year will include:
  • SRTRC XI v MSPs football match at Tynecastle Stadium
  • Unveiling of Show Racism the Red Card stadium billboards by Kilmarnock F.C. (sponsored by Unison)
  • Over sixty events taking place in communities nationwide to combat racism in our society, including events at Ayr United F.C., Dundee United F.C. and Heart of Midlothian F.C.,
  • Show Racism the Red Card actions at SPL, SFL, SWPL, SWFL, SJFA and Scottish Cup matches.
  • 'Unite Against Racism' actions at UEFA Champions League fixtures.
  • Educational workshops in schools and with community groups across Scotland.

Football is a sport that is followed by people across the world, and football matches should be an enjoyable experience for all, whatever their racial or religious background.

If you see or hear racism at any level of football, please report it to stewards or police, and record the complaint at www.theredcardscotland.org. The web site also includes updates on Fortnight of Action events and more information on the "Red Card" campaign in Scotland.
