RESERVES DRAW 1 - 1 WITH KILMARNOCK

9th September 2008

This was a game that the Reserves should have won, but could have quite easily ended up losing.

Territorially on top for most of the game they looked to have won the game having gone in front with 19 minutes left.

But the visitors equalised with seven minutes remaining and only a terrific stop from Michael McGovern from Allan Johnston prevented the Rugby Park side leaving a sodden Station Park with all three points.

Although United dictated matters, they didn't create as many chances as they should have done.

But the Tannadice team really should have gone ahead after 33 minutes when a Paul Dixon cross found Gordon Pope, completely unmarked, but the defender sliced his shot wide of the target.

Though they hadn't really figured as an attacking force , the Rugby Park visitors almost took the lead two minutes from the break when Rhian Dodds played in Donovan Simmonds, but the on loan striker from Coventry curled his effort past the far post.

Just two minutes into the second half, Killie keeper Chad Harpur was at full strength to tip Ryan McCord's cunning curler from 20-yards round the post.

Justice appeared to be done in the 71st minute when United finally went ahead. Marco Andreoni played the ball forward to Prince Buaben who laid it into the path of David Goodwillie and he netted with a cool, angled low finish.

However seven minutes from the end Danny Swanson brought down David Cox and Iain Flannigan's free-kick from just outside the penalty arc took a deflection off the top of the wall and flew in at the top corner.
