In an eerily empty Ibrox, the Tannadice second string brought the curtain down on their season with a narrow victory at the end of a closely fought contest.
The all-important goal came with fifteen minutes left when Steven Robb skipped past two defenders as he drove in from the left to fire in a shot with the keeper blocked.
However, Eric Odhiambo was on hand to crash home the loose ball from close range.
There was a distinct end of season feel to the first half.
The only real chance fell to Rangers' Andrew Shinnie who headed a shot from Paul Emslie past the post when he seemed certain to score after 40 minutes.
The second half action was mercifully more expansive.
Early on Prince Buaben saw his effort held by keeper Scott Gallacher and almost immediately a Rory Loy angled drive was beaten away by visiting keeper Euan McLean.
Very shortly after United had gone ahead, Prince Buaben played a one-two with Kevin Smith, but the Ghanaian's first time shot was saved.
The only threat to a Tangerine victory came five minutes from the end when substitute Chris Craig blasted a Loy cut-back narrowly over.
