The SPL have today published two fixture models for the final Clydesdale Bank Premier League games in season 2007/08, one of which extends the season to Thursday 22 May. Chairman Eddie Thompson has voiced his concerns over the extension in a letter to SPL Secretary Iain Blair today.
The fixture models cover two scenarios: one where Rangers FC advance to the UEFA Cup Final; and one where they do not. Each scenario accommodates the two remaining outstanding matches, Motherwell FC Vs Rangers FC and St Mirren FC Vs Rangers FC. Should Rangers reach the UEFA Cup Final, Dundee United's home game against Celtic will be moved from Sunday 18 May to Thursday 22 May, 7.45pm kick off. The models can be found on the SPL
website.
Chairman Eddie Thompson said that although the full extent of his correspondence was private he was deeply concerned about the prospect of extending the season until 22 May for a number of reasons. These included the not insignificant financial impact, the 12 day gap from the previous SPL fixture and, very importantly, the fact that supporters, once again, are being asked to change their arrangements to a much less convenient time. The Chairman stressed that he wished Rangers every success in their bid for a UEFA Cup final place but did not see why others should bear the cost of this.
