UNDER-19S WIN 6-0 AGAINST GRETNA

28th February 2008

The conditions posed more problems to the Tannadice side than an ineffective Gretna side at Glenesk Park yesterday afternoon.

A slightly bobbly surface allied to a strong blustery wind sweeping diagonally across the park weren't conducive to good football, but it didn't prevent the young Tangerines rattling in half a dozen goals.

The alertness of Scott Allan led to the first after eleven minutes. He nipping in front of visiting keeper Jake Cunningham as he tried to clear and was brought down with Ryan McCord netting the resultant penalty.

United's star performer, the lively Johnny Russell, then scored twice either side of the interval to put the outcome beyond doubt.

Right on the break, he headed home at the back post after Sean Fleming's free-kick came off the top of a Gretna defender's head.

Eight minutes after the restart, Russell took a Fraser Milligan pass and swivelled before volleying home from 12-yards.

On the hour mark, Russell's persistence engineered a fourth, his cut back being knocked home by Ryan Dow from close-range.

The one-way traffic continued and after 71 minutes Ross McCord deftly lofted the ball over the top of the defence and Ryan Dow did likewise over the keeper for the fifth.

With five minutes left David Brophy completed the rout, ramming the ball into the roof of the net from the edge of the box.
