Dundee United tonight confirmed that Barry Robson has signed for Celtic after a transfer fee between the two clubs had been agreed earlier. The loan signing of forward Jim O'Brien, from Celtic to Dundee United was also confirmed.
Manager and Director of Football Craig Levein said, "Both myself and the Chairman would have preferred Barry to remain a Dundee United player, but he made it abundantly clear on a number of occasions that he wanted to move on. He felt that at his age, he had one last chance of a major contract and we couldn't persuade him otherwise. He's a fantastic player, greatly admired by the Chairman and myself and we wish him well in his future career."
As part of the deal agreed with Celtic, forward Jim O'Brien will be moving to Tannadice on loan until the end of the season. The player complete the necessary formalities at Tannadice today.
The 20 year old forward has been a prolific scorer for Celtic Reserves and has been capped at U19 level by the Republic of Ireland. Last season he had a successful loan spell at Dunfermline Athletic, helping the club reach the final of the Scottish Cup.
This season he has made two first team appearances for Celtic, once in the win over Gretna in the SPL and also in the victory over Stirling in the Scottish Cup.
Craig Levein said, "I'm delighted to add Jim O'Brien to the squad. He's proved he can score goals at every level and is highly regarded throughout the game. In fact, I tried to get him last year at this time but a deal had already been done to take him to Dunfermline. He can play wide right and in midfield and will strengthen the attacking options available to me."
