Taking charge of the Reserves for the first time, new Tannadice coach Gary Kirk saw his young charges well beaten by a far more experienced Easter Road side at Almondvale.
Perfectly illustrating just how inexperienced a United side this was can be gleaned by Greg Cameron and David Robertson being the only two outfield players who weren't eligible for the youth team!
But Kirk will have been encouraged with the side's battling qualities. Indeed, they had their chances, which included a missed penalty.
Just nine minutes had gone when Clayton Donaldson opened the scoring, running on to Darron Gray's through ball to finish clinically.
That lead lasted only nine minutes when Ryan Dow scored with a powerful near post header after a good right wing run and cross from Scott Paterson.
However, two minutes later, Dean Shiels restored the Easter Road side's lead, after Phil McGrath brought down Donaldson for what looked a rather soft penalty.
And three minutes later, Filipe Morais marvellously struck free kick from 25 yards extended their lead.
Only an outstanding save by Euan McLean prevented Morais scoring again after 32 minutes, but shortly before the break, the home side cleared a Johnny Russell effort off the line.
With six minutes of the second half gone, Morias did get the better of McLean hammering home from 20 yards for Hibs' fourth.
United spurned a golden opportunity six minutes later when David Robertson's spot kick was saved after Ryan McCord had been fouled.
Midway through the second half, a Greg Cameron drive was tipped just round the post as United fought to the end.
But Morais had the last word in 73 minutes as he completed his hat trick for the home side's fifth, latching on to a through ball to round McLean and to knock the ball into an empty net.
