Depleted as they were, the Tannadice Youths were indeed unfortunate to lose out to a fluent Easter Road outfit at Newtongrange yesterday afternoon.
Despite being under-strength United probably enjoyed the better of the first half possession against a more experienced Hibs side, though it has to be said without creating a great deal.
And even when they did fall behind on the hour mark when Johnston rammed home the rebound following a good save by Jamie Connolly, the visitors were decidedly unlucky not to earn a draw.
That was particularly true after seventy minutes when they were denied a stonewall penalty as Johnny Boyle's netbound shot was punched off the line, yet no penalty was forthcoming.
Compounding, United's misfortune, Jordan Love was red-carded in the very last minute following an off the ball incident.
