Dundee United continued their fine home form and climbed to point-even joint second in the table with a deserved 2-1 victory over Rangers at a packed Tannadice Park.
United manager Craig Levein kept faith with the same side that humbled Hearts at Tynecastle last week. The only forced change was that of keeper Szamotulski being replaced by youngster Euan McLean.
After a quiet start, the match came alive in the fifth minute with the game's first flashpoint. Noel Hunt's quick feet deceived Rangers' full back Alan Hutton, who lunged in with a late challenge. The foul earned him a yellow card and Hunt's reaction also saw him booked.
The first attempt on goal soon followed, when a cross from Dillon on the right found Noel Hunt at the far post, but he headed over the bar.
United had another opportunity midway through the first half. Gomis won the ball in midfield and found Robson on the right. The United captain cut inside and unleashed a 20-yarder, but McGregor saved well.
Rangers' first real attack came after 25 minutes. A free kick from Ferguson found Cousin on his own six yards out. The striker volleyed past young McLean in the goal but, thankfully for United, the linesman flagged for offside.
A couple of minutes later, United took the lead. A free-kick on the left was swung in by Flood and found Lee Wilkie at the far post to volley from close range.
Half-time Summary:United started the game positively, keeping good possession which stopped Rangers from finding their way into the match. And the home side took a deserved lead on 28 minutes. The goal seemed to spark Rangers into life but the solid United defence kept them at bay.
Second Half:The home side started the second half brightly with Jordan Robertson robbing Alan Hutton to drive forward. But last week's two-goal hero blazed his effort way over.
Rangers gradually forced their way into the game, and United's resistance was eventually broken when Damarcus Beasley was awarded a dodgy looking penalty when he was tripped by Kalvenes, who looked to have got a toe to the ball. Cousin stepped up to slot home the penalty and bring Rangers level on 52 minutes.
United, feeling somewhat hard done by, hit back almost immediately. A ball in towards Robertson in the penalty area saw the striker hauled down by Carlos Cuellar and United were awarded a penalty of their own. Barry Robson stepped up and fired the ball down the middle of Alan McGregor's goal to put United back in front on 54 minutes.
With just one minute remaining, Rangers almost snatched a draw when Beasley crossed for substitute Kris Boyd, but the Scotland striker blazed over from eight yards, and United held on for another deserved home win.
Full Time Summary:United went in at half-time with a deserved 1-0 lead and although Rangers came out fighting in the second half, United weathered the storm and had chances to put the game beyond reach. However, another battling display saw United run out worthy 2-1 winners to maintain their fine record at Tannadice and send the fans home happy.
