United got back to winning ways with a well deserved victory over a spirited Motherwell side. A Darren Dods header, his first for the club, with 78 minutes on the clock was enough to earn United all three points.
Craig Levein made two changes to the side that started at Celtic Park. Christian Kalevnes returned from injury and there was also a place in the eleven for Steven Robb. Dropping to the bench were David and Jordan Robertson. It was also great to see Jon Daly listed as a substitute after a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee problem.
United started the game extremely well and within the first three minutes had gone close with shots from Buaben and Hunt as well as a headed effort from Robson. With 15 minutes on the clock, United had their best chance of the half when Kalvenes and Robb combined well to set up Hunt but Jim Paterson made an outstanding challenge to clear for the Steelmen. It was all United in the opening period with some excellent football and with ten minutes of the half left they were unfortunate not to be ahead when Robb found the head of Hunt who was thwarted by Smith. On the stroke of half time the impressive Buaben again tested Smith but the visitors' keeper saved well.
Motherwell were more of an attacking force in the second period and a minute after the break Stephen Hughes went close when firstly he had a shot saved by Szamotulski and from the rebound Gomis cleared his second effort off the line. It was United though who continued to look the more likely to score and twice Noel Hunt headed within inches of Graeme Smith's goalpost. Clarkson then had a good chance to put 'Well ahead when he rounded Szamotulski but, with the goal gaping, he rolled the ball wide of the right hand post. The game was decided with 12 minutes left when a superb Robson corner was met at the back post by the towering Dods who headed into the back of the net.
Summing Up: A deserved victory for United who dominated large periods of the game and made a number of very good chances. Motherwell did have a couple of glorious chances in the second half but anything other than a home win would have been harsh.
Man of the match: For his range of excellent passing in the midfield the award goes to Prince Buaben.
