The visitors were on top in the opening period but United dominated after the break and counters from Noel Hunt and a superb free kick from Barry Robson, in front of the watching Alex McLeish, gave United all three points. United played the final 20 minutes of the match with ten men after Morgaro Gomis was red carded for two bookable offences.
Craig Levein made two changes to the side that progressed to the Third Round of the CIS Cup. Not surprisingly Barry Robson and Lee Wilkie returned with David Robertson and Garry Kenneth dropping to the bench. New signing Jordan Robertson started again in attack following his scoring debut against Ross County in midweek.
The game was played in a swirling wind and in truth the visitors were in control in the first half. In the early stages a dangerous Latapy corner was deflected on to his own crossbar by Dods and towards the end Darren Barr hit the post from close range. On the stroke of half time Holden missed a glorious chance when he had only Szamotulski to beat. United did have their moments and there was a loud appeal for a penalty when a Buaben cross struck Jack Ross but the referee waved play on.
United turned the game around in the second period but they almost fell behind after 49 minutes when Patrick Cregg struck the post from 25 yards. After that United dominated and just before the hour mark Noel Hunt sprung the offside trap and calmly slotted the ball past Krul. Shortly after United should have been further ahead but Darren Dods missed from close range. Gomis was then ordered off after receiving two bookings in three minutes but this seemed to spur United on further and with six minutes left on the clock Robson put the game beyond the Bairns when he sent a 20 yard free kick into the top right hand corner of the net.
Summing Up: An excellent three points for United particularly after the first half. Similarly to the previous Saturday, the second period was totally different and United ran out deserved winners. Confidence will also be high following a fourth clean sheet of the SPL campaign.
Man of the Match: Willo Flood. He was in fine form for United and looked dangerous particularly in the second half. A mention also for Barry Robson whose free kick is already a contender for goal of the season.
