A youthful Tannadice second string crashed to defeat at the hands of a vastly more experienced Caley Thistle side yesterday afternoon at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium.
Only Stuart Duff in the Tangerines ranks had any great first team experience whereas more than half the home side are regular top team men.
It was an eighteen-minute spell leading up to the interval that proved so disastrous for the visitors, during which they leaked four goals.
However, switching midfielder Greg Cameron back into central defence, after the interval steadied the Tannadice ship.
And having pulled a couple of goals back United were threatening to get back in the game until a breakaway fifth killed off any hopes of a comeback.
The opener came after 27 minutes on-loan Phil McGuire scored with the aid of a deflection.
Three minutes later, a magnificent finish from Rory McAllister saw United fall further behind. And three minutes later Dean McDonald scored the first of his double, losing his markers to lash a shot into the roof of the net.
Just before McDonald ran through to score Caley's fourth right on the whistle, United had their best effort of the half when David Goodwillie hit the bar from close range.
After the interval, it was different story and two fine finishes from Jonny Russell thrust the visitors back in the game.
After 52 minutes, he raced through to coolly slot the ball home and twenty minutes later, at the third time of asking netted after finding himself clear.
In between those goals, David Goodwillie again hit the bar and Russell was also through on the keeper for a third time, but on this occasion, Malkowski denied him.
But with six minutes left, John Rankin hit a low drive that went in off the post to seal the home side's first win of the season.
