A second half own goal was enough to give Dundee United victory at Almondvale. A teasing Steven Robb cross from the right was headed into his own net by Livingston right back Dave MacKay as teenage striker Johnny Russell waited to pounce.
An uneventful first half produced little in the way of attempts on goal. It was the eighth minute before either side threatened when some neat footwork by Graeme Dorrans on the edge of the United box allowed him to fire a shot just over the bar.
There was a worrying moment for United after 21 minutes when skipper Barry Robson was hit at point blank range by a shot from a Livingston trialist. After receiving some treatment on the pitch, Robson was led off to the dressing room and replaced four minutes later by Prince Bauben.
Morgaro Gomis had United's first attempt at goal after 29 minutes but his long range shot went harmlessly wide of the keeper's left hand post.
A minute later, David Goodwillie charged down a Livingston clearance at the edge of the box but goalkeeper Liberda managed to dive on the ball before he could get a shot on goal.
United keeper Szamoltulski was then called into action at the other end when he dived to his left to gather a shot from a Livingston trialist.
On 36 minutes, Craig Levein introduced teenager Johnny Russell to the game in place of Craig Conway to support David Goodwillie up front.
United's best chance of the half came in the final minute when a Steven Robb cross from the byline on the left was headed into the ground at the back post by Willo Flood but easily saved by Liberda.
United took control of the game in the second half and Willo Flood could have put them ahead after 55 minutes when his strong running gave him the chance of a shot at goal but it was to go over the bar from 15 yards.
The deadlock was finally broken after 63 minutes. Good interplay down the right wing saw Sean Dillon get to the byline. He made to cross but pulled it back to Steven Robb. Robb's whipped cross found the head of Livingston's Dave MacKay who could only put it past his own keeper and into the net.
Livingston could have levelled the match with 11 minutes to go but Liam Fox could only shoot inches wide of the keeper's right hand post after the ball broke to him 12 yards out.
