SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LIFTED BY BARCA VISIT

Speaking exclusively to Dundee United Media, Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond yesterday described Barcelona's pre-season visit to St Andrews - and their friendly against Dundee United - as a "great lift for Scottish football".

The First Minister yesterday arrived at the St Andrews University Playing Fields to meet the Barcelona squad and staff, and was presented with a signed Barcelona shirt by the Catalan club.

Following the presentation, the politician took time out from his busy schedule to speak to Scott Simpson of Dundee United Media. Asked about the impact the Catalan club's visit has for the country, Salmond confirmed that the Spanish giants had been impressed by the facilities they are using.

"Scotland has a friendship treaty with Catalunya, and the Club is very much aware of that, and talked to me about it. I spoke with the Mayor of Barcelona at the Uefa Cup Final, and we've had a lot of contact, which is all to the good."
