RESERVES DEFEAT ST MIRREN 2 - 0

12th September 2006

For the game at Station Park, Tony Docherty's side lined-up in a 4-4-2 formation.

McLean - Burnett, O'Byrne, Kenneth, Gardiner - Easton, Matingou (trialist), Robertson, Barrau (trialist) - Brewster, Goodwillie.

Early on it was St Mirren who were the more dangerous side and twice Euan McLean was forced into action, saving at full stretch from Scott Gemmill and turned away a Scott McGinn effort within the opening ten minutes.

And that very much set the tone for the first half with Euan McLean much the busier of the two keepers.
On 25 minutes, McLean acrobatically beat out a David McKenna volley.

Towards the end of the first half, Tony Docherty's side started to make in roads on Craig Hinchcliffe's goal and he was fortunate when a David Robertson header deflected off David Goodwillie straight into his arms.
Just before the break, David Robertson played David Goodwillie in, but Hinchcliffe saved his effort.

But Hinchcliffe was beaten within a minute from into the second half when French trialist Xavier Barrau crossed from the left and boss Craig Brewster's near post header went through his arms and into the net.
More McLean magic enabled the home side to retain that advantage when Euan brilliantly blocked Billy Mehmet's header from point-blank range after 63 minutes.

With twelve minutes left, McLean was again in the thick of the action diverting an Iain Anderson's angled drive for a corner.

The sting in the tail for Saints came in the very last minute when substitute Marco Andreoni threaded the ball through to David Goodwillie, and the striker celebrated his first full ninety minutes of the season, by stroking the ball home from six yards after initially looking to have lost the opportunity.

Team: McLean, Burnett, Gardiner, Trialist, O'Byrne, Kenneth, Easton (Andreoni 32), Robertson, Brewster (Feeney 71), Goodwillie, Trialist. Subs not used Gibson, Pope, Gray.

Summary: Euan McLean was the hero as the reserves maintained their unbeaten record this season. If Saints had the better of the chances, then it is goals that count and on that score, United were definitely superior to Saints.
