UNDER-19S DEFEAT ST MIRREN 1-0

25th August 2006

The Youths maintained their unbeaten start to the new season with a narrow win at McKenna Park on Friday afternoon.

As they had done in their previous two games, Stevie Campbell's side took the lead and then proved very difficult to break down.

Saints' best chances came early on, but after failing to capitalise on a couple of free headers, the home side fell behind after 27-minutes.

Skipper Marco Andreoni was fouled just outside the box and got up to curl the resultant free-kick into the bottom right-hand corner from 22 yards.

Thereafter, Saints had the better of the possession, but the Tangerines came closest to scoring, particularly when Fraser Milligan made a great run, only to fire over from right in front of goal when a little bit of composure would have doubled his side's lead.

Team: Gibson, Milligan, McMechan, O'Boyle, Pope, Paterson, McCord, Andreoni, Fleming (Mathieson 77), Jeffrey (Love 86), Feeney. Subs not used: O'Hara, Travers, Gray.

Stevie Campbell's comments:

"This game followed the pattern of the previous game against Dunfermline when, having taken a first half lead, we held on. But we didn't have to defend anything like as frantically as we did against the Pars. In fact, I can't recall keeper John Gibson having to make a save of note at any time in the game. And that isn't just down to the defence doing its job because most pleasing of all, we were defending well as a team."
