RESERVES DRAW WITH KILMARNOCK

29th August 2006

Tony Docherty's team lined up in a 4-4-1-1 formation:-
McLean - Abbot, Trialist, Kenneth, Gardiner - Robb, Burnett, Andreoni, Easton - Robertson - Miller.

The trialist in defence was none other than Lee Wilkie who was sporting a tangerine jersey for the first time and whilst he was to be involved in United's goal, the first threat came from the other Lee in the side - Miller - in the very first minute.

The former Bristol City striker powered in a long-range volley that visiting keeper Cameron Bell tipped past. In a contest in which there was little between the teams, only a reaction save by Euan McLean prevented Andrew Barrowman equalising after 18 minutes, the United keeper doing magnificently to tip the striker's close range effort up and over the bar.

At the other end Gary Locke deflected David Robertson's snapshot over the bar seven minutes later. But on 32 minutes United did score when Bell, under pressure from Wilkie, could only palm away an Easton corner and the ball fell to Garry Kenneth whose finely judged chip from 12 yards clipped the underside of the bar on its way in. Five minutes later, there was a blow for United when Steven Robb had to be carried off with an ankle injury.Taking his place was Robbie Feeney and that prompted a change to a 4-4-2 system. The sub partnered Lee Miller up front and David Robertson dropped back into midfield with Marco Andreoni going wide right.

As had been pre-arranged, Lee Wilkie came off after his 45 minutes for five months and Gordon Pope came on at left-back with Ross Gardner moving inside alongside Garry Kenneth.

After the interval, the visitors had the better of the chances with David Fernandez, obviously looking to shine against his former colleagues, twice dragging shots just wide of the far post. Sandwiched between those efforts, Stephen Murray clattered an upright with a free-kick from 25-yards. It wasn't all Killie though, and sixteen minutes from the end, Garry Kenneth would have been on the scoresheet again had Jamie Hamill not cleared off the line and eight minutes later a Lee Miller header was deflected past. But Killie put in a powerful finish and after having a goal chalked off with three minutes left, got one that counted in the very last minute when Barrowman headed home a Murray cross.

Team:- McLean, Abbot, Gardiner, Burnett, Wilkie (Pope 46), Kenneth, Robb (Feeney 37), Andreoni, Miller, Robertson, Easton.
