BREWSTER WINNER DEFEATS HERFOLGE

12th July 2006

Craig Brewster's first United goal since his return to the Club proved to be the winner for United over Danish First Division side Herfolge. Mikkel Christoffersen had opened the scoring early on for the Danes, but Steven Robb's neat finish had levelled the scores before Brewster's strike gave United a lead they held until the final whistle in front of an estimated 500 fans including a vociferous pocket of around 30 Arabs.

Craig Brewster handed trialist Lindsay Wilson a chance to impress in the right full back spot, and the Australian did a reasonable job there before being substituted at half time by fellow trialist Jeppe Hestehave.

The inclusion of Alan Archibald, William Easton and Brewster himself were the other changes to the side which started at Raith, with Kenneth, Conway, Cameron and Miller the men to make way.

Herfolge also appeared in 4-4-2 formation, with the Danish side containing Nigerian Justice Christopher, who represented his country at the 2002 World Cup, and Lithuanian international Auri Skarbalius.

After a bright start, in which both sides looked capable of creating openings, the home side took the lead in the ninth minute. Barry Robson dispossessed Martin Christensen by the corner flag on United's left, but his weak clearance was picked up by Herfolge's right back Mikkel Christoffersen, who charged into the area and shot powerfully into the top left hand corner.

United equalised six minutes later, only 20 seconds after Rynell had hit the post with a shot across Stillie. Steven Robb latched on to the resulting goal kick, and sidestepped the challenge of goalkeeper Cramer before rolling the ball into the empty net from 18 yards.

There were further efforts from Brewster and Duff midway through the half which went wide, before Brewster put United ahead in the 29th minute. Wilson played a free kick from half way, and Brewster's flick on Hunt, whose shot was blocked into the path of Brewster, put the United striker in the position to slam home from six yards.

Half Time: Herfolge 1-2 Dundee United

United made one change at half time, with one trialist replacing another, and Brewster giving Jeppe Hestehave the second half in place of Lindsay Wilson. The second half was to become a relative disappointment to the open attacking football at both ends in the first, with a plethora of substitutions for both sides interrupting the flow of the game.

Goalkeeper Cramer denied Brewster a second on the hour, saving with his legs then parrying Callaghan's shot on the rebound, and Archibald did well in the 67th minute to glance away Mikki Nielsen's cross in front of the waiting Isaksen.

Garry Kenneth had to concede a corner under pressure from Nielsen with 12 minutes remaining, and from Benjaminsen's set piece, Kenneth had to block on the line to keep United's lead intact.

After Robertson's snapshot was saved by substitute goalkeeper Christian Pedersen, McLean saved well from Kahl's 30 yard curler.

As the game entered injury time, Archibald ensured that the lead was maintained, with a goal-line stop from Christensen's shot, before managing to blast clear with Isaksen bearing down on him a yard from goal.

Full Time: Herfolge 1-2 Dundee United

Summary: A good workout for United, with their hosts looking a strong side physically. The half time lead was a good reflection on the pattern of play in the opening 45 minutes, and although United looked to be under pressure in the final stages from Herfolge, they did by that time have a very young team on the pitch. Both trialists will have been happy to make an appearance, and although neither looked instantly impressive, they will both be a little short of fitness having done less pre-season work than the rest of the squad.

Man of the Match: Craig Brewster. Showed in the first half that even at the age of 39, his experience and technique have remained strong and enable him to influence the game with some deft touches. William Easton and Stuart Duff also made notable contributions, but Brewster's awareness to come off his marker, take the ball to feet and lay it off to a team-mate mean that he still has a strong part to play on the playing side.
