Dundee started positively with former United striker Andy McLaren mis-hitting a shot at Stillie's goal. An early corner for Dundee was headed wide by Bobby Mann as the United defence looked somewhat lethargic for starters.
Steven Robb seemed keen to impress against his former employers and was making good runs at the defence, a cross by Robb was knocked back across goal but there were no takers. On the other flank, Craig Conway was also impressive and, when he was felled, Barry Robson took a free kick that was headed across goal by Alan Archibald but Roy saved well.
United's lethargy seemed to continue as Dave McCracken gave away the ball needlessly allowing McLaren to force Stillie into a save. The best chance of the half fell to Lee Miller, Conway and Mair combined brilliantly on the right and the defender's cross was well saved by Roy. United still seemed shaky at the back and Stillie was again forced to save when the ball had been given away. Then, just before the referee's whistle for half time, Mark Kerr struck a dipping shot just wide after a corner.
Half time came and it was fair to say that Dundee had had more chances than United but that ours had been better.
The second half saw a trialist introduced at left back in place of Robb. Dundee started positively and a good show of strength by Archibald prevented any real threat on goal when Deasley threatened. Barry Robson was playing further forward and saw some good crosses - the first was missed by the onrushing Miller and then Manager Craig Brewster seemed to take the ball off the head of Conway when it seemed he was better placed to score. Dundee continued to threaten and Stillie was again on his toes saving well low to his left. Craig Brewster came off to be replaced by Samuel but it was Dundee who took the lead moments later. A defensive error meant that the ball got to Deasley who ran at goal before cracking a great shot past Stillie. United rallied and put pressure on the Dundee defence and a strong shout for handball in the penalty box was ignored by the referee and his assistant.
United continued to try everything, Robson's cross found Conway but the youngster failed to convert a good chance. Robson again came close when he flashed a shot across Roy's goal but just missed the far post. Noel Hunt replaced Lee Miller as United tried to get even and the Irishman's willingness to chase lost causes was well received by the support. Stillie saved well again - he even ended up in the box for a corner as United pushed on but alas it was not to be and the bragging rights were lost to the team from across the road .
