The local Dundee newspaper, The Evening Telegraph, has moved to provide an alternative trophy for the pre season local derby between Dundee United and Dundee. The eagerly awaited derby match is the highlight of a start of season family day in Dundee, but this year was trophy-less after the City of Discovery Campaign withdrew permission to use the trophy presented to the winners last year.
Steve Stirton National Promotions Manager at D C Thomson said, "We are delighted to sponsor the Evening Telegraph Challenge Cup in association with Radio Tay."
"When we heard that the pre season derby game was without a sponsor we immediately contacted both Dundee and Dundee United offering to step in."
"The Tele has the community of the city at heart and this is not just a football match. It will be a great family fun day for all at Dens Park on Saturday July 22. The Tele and Radio Tay will be running competitions to win boardroom hospitality along with entry tickets to what promises to be a great day out."
Derek Robertson, Dundee United Director added, "Both clubs are delighted that the Evening Telegraph has responded in this way. Local derbies are very special occasions, especially in Dundee, and both sets of fans are already looking forward to the game. Having a trophy to present to the winners at the end of the game gives it an added dimension.
"Both clubs are very proud to come from Dundee and to work closely in the local communities. We have been proud to represent the City of Dundee over the years and believe that this day will help to further raise the profile of the City. We are delighted therefore that such a well known and respected local company has agreed to sponsor the event."
Radio Tay will cover the event in association with The Evening Telegraph, with Ally Bally on hand to provide coverage at frequent intervals during the afternoon.
One of the undoubted highlights of the day will be the "fans' derby" between members of ArabTRUST and Dee4Life. This was an extremely popular event last year and raised a significant amount for good causes. Both supporters' trusts will be announcing details on how to apply to play in this shortly.
Doors open at 12pm on the day, with a special Soaperstars team challenging a combined Dundee & Dundee United 'Legends' side. The fans' derby kicks off at 2pm, with the main derby scheduled for a 3.15pm kick off. Various other activities will take place on the day. Tickets will go on sale from both Clubs early next week with prices set at
