Stevie Campbell's battlers were unlucky to lose out to Hibs in this afternoon's final league game of the season at North End Park.
But it was gutsy performance and one that augurs well for next season when almost the entire team on show today will be available next term - Gregg Burnett being the only exception.
Hibs may have threatened strongly, and finished with a flourish, but over the piece United created the better chances.
That was even evident in the early stages when Hibs were on top. Whilst the visitors had dominated the opening thirty minutes, it was United who should have scored first.
On 33 minutes, Sean Fleming and Chris Jeffrey combined to carve open the visitors' defence, only for Jeffrey to drive straight at the keeper after being sent clear.
But two minutes later, United found themselves trailing to a tremendous strike. From some 25 yards, Nicky Weightman fired a great left-foot drive into the top left-hand corner.
United's reply was instantaneous, going straight up the park and from Sean Fleming's great out-swinging cross, Robby Feeney, running in, netted at the far post.
Sandwiched between Feeney firing just past and Marco Andreoni heading narrowly over, both sides were reduced to ten men. Robby Feeney and Darren McCormack clashed which resulted in both being shown red cards.
As United continued to carve out the better chances, they twice went close to scoring.
First, Chris Jeffrey headed another dangerous Fleming cross narrowly past and shortly afterwards Joe Dingwall cleared another headed effort from Jeffrey off the line.
Hibs then went on to dominate the latter stages, but as earlier, it was without creating too many chances.
Unfortunately, the one exception to that came with seven minutes left when Martin Donald controlled a cross from the left to drilled in their winner.
