PARS PLUNDER POINTS

12th April 2006

Despite it being almost one-way traffic in direction of the Pars goal, the Reserves incredibly lost Wednesday afternoon's game at East End Park.

An absolute wonder strike earned the Pars three points, but that was just about their only credible goal attempt, illustrating just how undeserved their victory was. Calling it a Reserve game is something of a misnomer as, to all intents and purposes, it was two youth teams that contested this fixture. With the United side comprising mainly under-17s, the Pars were the more experienced of the two sides.

Although it was the second reserve game in the space of 24 hours, there was no question of fatigue, because only Barry Callaghan and Michael O'Byrne had started the goalless draw at Falkirk the previous day.

The goal that undid Tony Docherty's side came after ten minutes when Alex Scougall's superb strike from 35 yards flew into the top right hand corner. From then on it was a case of total tangerine domination and a procession of missed chances.

Five minutes after going behind, the home keeper did well to tip a Barry Callaghan free-kick over the bar. Before the break, three inviting crosses all found no takers in front of goal. On 35 minutes, Robbie Feeney failed to make contact with a cross from Kieran McAleenan. There was nobody on the end of a Keith Watson cross three minutes before the interval. The most glaring chance was two minutes after the re-start when Robbie Feeney hit the post when it seemed easier to score.

A mazy run by Barry Callaghan saw him deliver a shot that was blocked on the line. That just about marked Barry's last contribution, but having played sizable chunks of two games in two days, he looks to have fully recovered from the broken foot that had sidelined him for four months. In the closing stages, two further chances were squandered.

Three minutes from the end, Jordan Love fired past after being put through by Marco Andreoni. Then, right at the death, Robby Feeney headed a Gordon Pope shot past the post.

The United side was - (4-4-2) - Gibson - Watson, McGrath, O'Byrne, Pope - Callaghan (Gray 63), Andreoni, McCord (Russell 68), McAleenan, - Feeney, Paterson (Love 76). Sub not used: O'Hara.
