The Reserves staged a remarkable come-back to deservedly beat Aberdeen in an eight-goal thriller at Links Park this afternoon.
Indeed, a David Goodwillie goal was the pivotal point of a game that the Tangerines looked likely to lose, given that they were two down. But that goal gave the whole team a lift and the platform from which they then went on to record a well-deserved victory.
The early exchanges hardly foretold of the drama, with little of note happening, until Aberdeen took the lead. That came on 26 minutes when Darren Jackie's through header found John Stewart who fired home from fifteen yards.
Nine minutes later, David Donald sent Chris Maguire clear and, although Evan McLean parried his shot, Stewart was lying in wait to net the rebound.
A minute from the interval came the goal that was to turn the game on its head. David Goodwillie, rarely in the action up until then, pounced on Martin Skinner's misplaced pass back, evaded the challenges of two defenders plus the keeper before side-footing home.
Within a minute of the re-start, the sides were level, Robby Feeney re-enacting Kevin Gallagher's goal against Barcelona with his cross-cum-shot.
United took the lead in the 62nd minute when the ball broke to Barry Callaghan who knocked it home from ten yards.
Fifteen minutes from the end, Goodwillie cleverly flicked the ball round the keeper and somehow squeezed home the fourth from a seemingly impossible angle.
Five minutes later, Derek McInnes played the ball into Willie Easton who had made a diagonal run and he drove home the fifth with a right foot shot.
Stewart completed his hat-trick with six minutes left, but had little cause for celebration particularly as this defeat all but buried the Dons' hopes of winning the Reserve title.
