YOUTHS HOLD CELTIC TO A GOALLESS DRAW

22nd April 2006

Just before the first team kicked off at Inverness, the Youth Team came off Barrowfield having impressively held Celtic to a goalless draw.

Although Celtic won the Youth Title earlier in the week, it was still their full strength squad which Stevie Campbell's side faced, which meant that the home side had a considerable advantage physically and in age.

Star of the show was United keeper John Gibson, who made several outstanding saves, but it was far from being backs to the wall stuff for the teenage Tangerines.

In fact, Scott Fox in the Celtic goal pulled off a superb save to deny Kieran McAleenan after 16 minutes.

And whilst Gibson continued his heroics in the second half, United almost stole it right at the death when David Gray flicked just past from John Russell's cross.

But credit for holding the champions must go to the United back four and goalkeeper - they were simply outstanding.

Team: (4-4-2)
Gibson - Flynn, Watson, McGrath (McMechan 68), Pope - Gray, Burnett (Matheson 63), McCord, McAleenan - Feeney, J. Russell.

Subs Not Used: B Russell, O'Hara.
