Dundee United succumbed rather meekly to a formidable Rangers team today at Tannadice in front of a disappointed home crowd. The early signs were good as United pushed forward from kick-off and showed some attacking intent in the early stages.
In 25 minutes Rangers showed what was to come when Prso's header from a corner came back off the upright with Stillie well beaten. Three minutes later and the same player made it 1-0 Rangers when he turned McCracken inside out and unleashed an unstoppable drive into the roof of the United net.
Within a minute, United again lost possession inside its own half and as Rangers players poured forward, Ferguson fed the ball through to Boyd who had the easiest of finishes to make it 2-0. At this point United were not playing too badly as a team but defensive errors were costing them greatly.
In the 43rd minute, Boyd was once more clean through as the United defence parted straight down the middle. On this occasion the Rangers striker drove the ball over the bar.
Half Time: Dundee United 0 Rangers 2United again started well in the second half and Samuel was denied what looked like a stonewall penalty as he attempted to reach McInnes's cross ball. Referee McCurry waved away the appeals of the United players. Within a few minutes, Rangers broke up field and Prso crossed for Boyd to easily slot home number three with the United defence once more in disarray. In the 55th minute Stillie made a fantastic save from Boyd as Rangers threatened to run riot.
In the 60th minute, great play between Robson and Mulgrew saw Samuel in on goal but Waterreus denied the striker before his second effort cannoned off the post and out to safety. Samuel was looking keen however, and in the 65th minute he scored the goal his second half performance deserved, as he gathered the ball on the edge of the area and held off the challenge of the Rangers defence and goalkeeper before coolly slotting the ball into the net. Any hopes of a United recovery were almost put to bed two minutes later as Boyd struck the post when it looked easier to score.
In the 83rd minute, a dismal day for United was complete as Boyd struck home a finish after a corner from the left had evaded at least two United defenders' efforts at clearing the ball. All in all, it was a disappointing performance from United who, but for the poor finishing of Boyd and the Heroics of Stillie in the second half, could have lost by a heavier margin.
