The score at Murray Park on Saturday may not indicate it, but this was no bad result given all the circumstances.
Firstly regular keeper John Gibson went down with a bug and meant a first call up for Charles Samshonga between the sticks. In addition, Kieran McAleenan had to come off because he was suffering from a similar aliment. And on top of that Marco Andreoni, although he played through the 90 minutes, was similarly indisposed. United actually finished the game with only ten men as Greg Burnett went off injured after a tackle by Steven Stirling.
On the positive side no less than eight of the current Under-17 side were involved at the end, so it really does augur well for the future.
And although the lads lost, this performance may be the turning point with so many of next season's youth team involved and looking far from out of place. Up front, Robby Feeney, one of the older ones did well, too.
It was only after Rangers scored their third goal twelve minutes from the end that the game was beyond the Tannadice youngsters.
They suffered the handicap of going behind in the very first minute. Sloppy defending allowed Moses Askokodi to go past three players before shooting low into the bottom from 15 yards.
Although there was very little between the sides, Rangers doubled their lead on 33 minutes, Jason Crooks netting Steven Kinniburgh's right wing from close range.
Ten minutes into the second half, the visitors got themselves back in it with a superbly crafted and executed goal. Gordon Pope's 50-yard diagonal pass found Keith Watson and he fired home with an angled drive from the edge of the box.
Thereafter it was nip and tuck, but a second goal by Moses Askokodi - when he netted from 15 yards after the United defence failed to clear their lines - sealed our fate.
With the points in the bag, Rangers went on to dominate the closing stages.
