Stevie Campbell's team dug deep to secure a draw against their physically bigger and older Motherwell opponents at North End Park. Defending well, they restricted Motherwell to only a handful of chances despite being under the cosh for spells.
Up against a physically stronger and older Motherwell, they defended resolutely and, although under the cosh for long spells, had almost as many scoring opportunities.
One of the visitors beat efforts came early in the game, but United keeper John Gibson brilliantly saved a David Nixon drive. But not to be outdone, Kieran McAleenan brought out an equally as good a save by visiting keeper Peter Alexiou.
However, Motherwell did take the lead after 25 minutes when Robert Donnelly was allowed to rise unchallenged and head home from a corner. After that goal, United found themselves pushed back, but the Tanandice teenagers did well to get themselves back in the match eight minutes from the break. McAleenan angled a pass out to Gray on the right and his cross-cum-shot was deflected into in at the near by Nixon.
This turned the tide as United came into the game, but Motherwell were to again be the dominant force after the interval. But despite the visitors' greater possession, it was the Tannadice youngsters who had the best post interval chance.
Again McAleenan was the architect and his through pass found Chris Jeffrey, but his angled finish went inches over.
