An improved second half performance - which saw Lee Miller score twice and a Mark Kerr wonder strike - gave United a much needed 3-1 victory over Livingston at Tannadice. Sam Morrow had Livi ahead at half time in a poor match but, at the end of the day, the result handed Craig Brewster his first victory as United manager.
The manager rang the changes following last Saturday's defeat to Hibs. Derek Stillie reclaimed his place between the posts and also returning to the starting line-up were skipper Derek McInnes, Collin Samuel and young David Robertson. Missing out were the injured Grant Brebner with Stuart Duff and Alan Archibald dropping to the bench. New Livingston signing Noel Whelan was listed as a substitute.
In a dismal first half for the home side, the game sparked into life on the tenth minute mark when there was a chance at both ends. Following a slight hesitation from Mair in the penalty area, Sam Morrow did well to pounce on the loose ball and he shot narrowly wide. United went straight up the park and Fernandez picked out Lee Miller whose header was brilliantly tipped over by McKenzie. Livi took a deserved lead seven minutes later when Morrow wrestled the ball from Robson and his shot from twenty yards out beat Stillie low to the keeper's right. It could have been two when Walker robbed Robson but the Livi midfielder fired just wide. The home side were unlucky not to equalise just after the half hour mark when a Kerr cross was powerfully headed by David Robertson but the in-form McKenzie pushed the ball wide. The only other major talking point of the half was when Livi boss John Robertson was sent to the stand after he disputed a decision made by referee Thomson.
The points looked to be heading back to Almondvale until the last twenty minutes of the game when the Tangerines turned the game on its head. A ball in to the Livi penalty area after 68 minutes didn't look too dangerous but Lee Miller managed to collect the ball and slotted it home from eight yards out. Ten minutes later United took the lead when it looked like Greg Strong was about to clear but Mark Kerr did well to retrieve the ball at the edge of the penalty area and he slammed the ball home giving McKenzie no chance. With ten minutes remaining, the points were safe. It was Lee Miller again and this time it was an excellent solo effort. He gathered the ball just outside the box and flicked it over the Livi skipper Dorado. With McKenzie coming out to narrow the angle, the big forward placed the ball high into the Livi net. With the game safe, the manager gave David Goodwillie the last five minutes and, in the closing stages, the youngster could have made the score more impressive.
Summary: A much needed three points and at last a victory for Craig Brewster. Not the best game in the world but it was good to see Lee Miller net a brace.
Man of the Match: Barry Robson worked his socks off all afternoon and, whilst playing out of position, gave a fine performance.
