Goals from Jamie Smith and Stevie Crawford just before half time were enough to give Aberdeen victory in a game in which the visitors had their fair share of possession.
Apart from the injured Lee Mair, Gordon Chisholm had a fully fit squad to choose from and, following Saturday's excellent away victory at Falkirk, he named an unchanged starting eleven. Lee Miller and Collin Samuel provided extra firepower on the bench. Jimmy Calderwood was relying on the former Dundee and United forward line of Lovell and Crawford to supply the Dons goal threat.
The first half of the match was a fairly even contest with both sides looking dangerous on the break. Nicholson had a very good chance for Aberdeen after only five minutes but United came back into the game and twice went close through efforts from David Fernandez. The final ten minutes of the first half changed the whole complexion of the game when the home side put the game beyond their visitors. An individual effort from Smith on 35 minutes and a tap-in from Crawford after 43 minutes had Aberdeen two up. It could have been worse for United had Severin not headed over from six yards on the stroke of half time.
The second half was far less entertaining with fewer chances at both ends. It was United who had the best efforts to get back into the match and both David McCracken and Garry Kenneth were unlucky to see headers cleared off the line from threatening corners by Barry Robson. Towards the end of the game Collin Samuel caused the home defence problems and Ryan Esson had to tip a dipping cross over the bar.
Match Summary: In a fairly entertaining match United competed well but Aberdeen probably just shaded it as they made the better chances on the night.
Man of the match: David Fernandez had a good first half but the award goes to
Barry Robson who tried hard throughout the game.
